2011 - Day Three Hundred Thirty Four; Wednesday...

It's what's for dinner...

Full day of BOD meeting, and it was a good and productive one. Lots of new information shared.

Really? A Traffic jam in Georgetown? Well, that is what happened. Even so, I made it home before dark, and was able to go out and put the girls to bed, and give them some fresh feed. They were all on their respective roosts; it is interesting how they each go to the same roost area every night. There is definitely a pecking order!

Breakfast meeting tomorrow, PM meeting late morning, and meeting with a few of our agents in the early afternoon. All gonna be very worthwhile!

Friday is the installation of the incoming Board of Directors, and it will be held at the Hyatt Lost Pines in Bastrop. Spending the night, not gonna be out on the roads after the installation.

2011 - Day Three Hundred Thirty Three; Tuesday...

If you squint your eyes, this photo will look better, I swear! These lights have stayed up on Aunt Mary's old fence at the front of the property since last year (maybe two years now) and I really like them. I turned them on Thanksgiving day, and they will stay on until the New Year. These LED lights are really bright and there is a sharpness to them that the other miniature lights did not have. Whatever...

A nice quiet day in the office today. That is, the morning was nice and quiet. Things got a little bit busy in the afternoon, the phones were ringing, appointments were being made, it was like we were working in a real estate office. Interesting. It is that end-of-one-month-beginning-of-another-month syndrome. Everything is back-to-back. Fun and interesting.

Another blue egg today, but still only one blue egg a day, so we are not sure if we have one young chick laying or more than one. Just can't tell yet.

Tomorrow will be a fun day; all day meetings, but we will get a lot of good work accomplished.

2011 - Day Three Hundred Thirty Two; Monday...

Okay, I am back into the early 2000's as far as living in the country is concerned. My Internet service at the house has been restored, we are looking forward to indoor plumbing sometime in the near future!

Today was a really good day overall, and I am looking forward to tomorrow and the rest of the week. The end of the week is going to be particularly fun, and this is just the beginning of the party season, so there is that to look forward to as well.

I forgot my camera in the office today, so I am using a photo that I actually took on Saturday before the Internet debacle. I love (as you may already be aware) morning glories, and this photo of the glories and the bees is a particularly fun one for me. I hope you like it too.

Cold this morning, had to turn the water off to the cattle, and turned it back on when I got home so the troughs would fill. I will go back out and turn the water off again tonight, just to be careful. I think it would have to stay REALLY cold for a REALLY long time for there to be any damage, but I would rather be safe than sorry.

Hope all is good with you. I am the luckiest man in the universe!

2011 - Day Three Hundred Thirty One; Sunday...

Still no Internet, I am so deprived...

Got almost everything on my To Done list accomplished; cattle fed and fresh hay taken out. Pipes wrapped in the pastures, fresh alfalfa hay in the girls nesting boxes. 20 MPH winds, wind chill about 27 degrees although it warmed up to the low 50's. I did not venture up on the roof to try and correct the fallen Internet antenna. Discretion is the better part of valor in old age...

We did make it to Dairy Queen, and also got some small errands done. We did NO shopping, un-American in that sense, although there is plenty of stuff on my list. I will wait til I am in Austin.

My fingers are crossed that the guys come to fix the Internet tomorrow. I may do two entries in celebration if they do.

2011 - Day Three Hundred Thirty; Saturday...

No Internet service. Just a post from my iPad to say I did it.

Returning to civilization on Monday.

No Internet has its advantages, kind of like a snow day. Once you resign yourself to it, it is okay.

2011 - Day Two Hundred Twenty Nine; Friday...

This journal entry is a day late, breaking a streak of 1,060 daily journal entries.

I want to thank Western Broadband for their stellar customer service by IGNORING the fact that the antenna on the house fell over and left us with no Internet. They could save the day by fixing it today (as promised) but that is looking kind of 'iffy' right now.

Any of you rural folk know anything about Hughes Net?

2011 - Day Three Hundred Twenty Eight; Thursday...

It's Thanksgiving, and I have hundreds of things to be thankful for. I am also thankful for the ability to share in everyone elses words of Thanksgiving. Keep on...

I actually did stay in bed a little longer this morning, I did not get out of bed until almost seven. Then I got (a little bit) busy, but really spent the day doing as little as possible. This is a photo of Jody and the boy going for their daily walk down the road this morning. They go as far as the telephone pole, and then turn around and head back to the house. That is also before their ritual ride for the day, so the dog can bark at what there is to bark at.

We did go and let the cattle into the back pasture, and we needed to do just a little bit of fence repair, which led to us having to do a little bit more fence repair, which led to us having to make some additional temporary repairs until I can get some more wire for the electric part of the fence tomorrow. But, temporarily, the cattle are loose in the back pasture and all seems well with them.

I also turned on the holiday lights that I strung on the old fence (where Aunt Mary used to live) last year, and they a pretty to look at. The newer LED lights are really much more brilliant than the older incandescents.

We went to visit our friends Michael and Lynda for dinner this afternoon, and there was a full house of family there. We made it home by about 5:30, and then it was time to put the chickens to bed. Two eggs today, one blue, one brown. I am still pretty infatuated with the blue eggs, but the more I look at them, the greener they seem to be. Maybe a teal color. Maybe blue/green. But one thing I know for sure, they are not white or brown.

2011 - Day Three Hundred Twenty Seven; Wednesday...

One of the great things about a long, four-day Holiday Weekend is that it will seem like FRIDAY for three days this week; Wednesday, Thursday AND FRIDAY! YIPPEE... I asked Jody to tie me into the bed tonight so I will not be getting out of the bed at four o'clock in the morning. HEY! This is a PG Journal...don't go there.

A nice quiet (for the most part) uneventful (for the most part) day today. I left for home about 1:30, and traffic was already congested, but it was not a parking lot on the Interstate.

When I got home, I went down for a little nap, and then Jody and I went into Jarrell to pick up pies that I had ordered from the Kolache shop. Very nice. We are working on a cherry pie tonight. YUM!

After we got home, I went out to check on the girls, and there was another blue egg in the nest. Jody had collected a couple eggs earlier in the day, but he had reported that one of the older girls was in the nest, so there could be more. SO, that makes two blue (kinda green really Doren) eggs, and that is a good thing. They are SO TINY though. So very beautiful and delicate. Pretty.

Hopefully I will sleep in tomorrow, without the need for restraints.

2011 - Day Three Hundred Twenty Six; Tuesday...

It's HUMPDAY! Yep, this is the middle day of the short week, and all is right with the world!

This photo was actually taken last night, and the clouds were beautiful. About 3 o'clock this morning, we were very fortunate to receive ALMOST an inch of rain. That makes us just just about 30 inches of rain for the past year. BUT, we are happy for anything we can get.

Of course, along with the rain was a good bit of thunder and lightning, so the dog was not really happy about that. He did get over it though, and the whole thing is forgotten, and he took several extra naps during the day today.

ALMOST THE LONG WEEKEND.

2011 - Day Three Hundred Twenty Five; Monday...

I don't know about you, but even though it is 75 degrees outside right now (and it was warmer earlier) I have felt kind of chilly all day. It has been grey and cloudy for the past several days, and it did rain in Austin a little bit. But so far there has been no rain at the house, but there is still a pretty decent chance.

I had an early morning appointment for a stress test, and I guess everything came out okay; they did not rush me to the Heart Hospital for a by-pass, and I have not been told any results. SO, no news is good news. It was probably just gas, anyway!

We got our first blue egg today, and it is a beauty. It is really small though, compared to the eggs we usually get from the girls. BUT, this is their first egg, and they are still pretty young, but it is a good start. These are the four eggs Jody gathered up today, and you can see how delicate the blue one is. Very nice. Such a pretty color.

Nothing really exciting on the schedule for tomorrow or Wednesday, and then we will have the long weekend. I am really looking forward to that. PIE!

2011 - Day Three Hundred Twenty Four; Sunday...

Up early this morning and I was at the Austin Empty Bowl Project at about 7:30 to start helping them set up. I carried tables and chairs out of the auditorium and set them up under tents for soup and sitting, and then we to my real calling...

Line Control! I was in charge (had my own walkie-talkie and everything), and being in charge is something I like. Once I got the crowds controlled, I asserted myself and started fundraising via raffle tickets for a beautiful hand made quilt. I am a pretty good fundraiser. It is hard to resist someone when asked 'May I please have a dollar'. Okay, I know you can resist that (maybe) from a guy with a cardboard sign in the left hand lane of traffic, but when you are standing in line of a charitable project benefiting the Capital Area Food Bank of Central Texas, it is not easy NOT to cough up a dollar. ONE DOLLAH! Do not make me give you my sad puppy face.

I left about 12:30, once the crowds had pretty much thinned out, and made it home by about 1:30. I fed the cattle (who were very happy to see me), and put out a fresh bale of hay for them. Since this is Thanksgiving week, I am going to open the back pasture to them on Thursday, so that will be a good thing. Everything in the pastures are SO VERY DRY, there are giant cracks in the ground, literally big enough for me to get a front tractor tire caught. Thankfully so far, not of the cattle have gotten a leg caught in the cracks, that would not be something with a happy ending.

Jody and I got in the car and headed for Dairy Queen, and we also stopped at the Tractor Supply store for bird seed. That was followed by a brief nap, and then, before we left to have dinner at Denny's in Jarrell, I went out to put the chickens to bed. I do not think I have posted any photos of the new girls since they were little. The will be six months old in less than two weeks, and I am REALLY looking forward to seeing their blue eggs. That will be fun. This is a photo of four of the six of them. See their cool blue legs? Interesting!

Short week this week, then a long weekend.

2011 - Day Three Hundred Twenty Three; Saturday...

A nice day if I do say so myself. Although there was really no rest or relaxation to be had, overall, it was a nice day. I started the day with my usual chores, then I made a pile of eggs for me and Jody.

I took off for the Board by about 7:15 or so, I was teaching a class that began at 9 o'clock, and that was over by about noonish. I then headed to the office, because my remote access was not working, and I thought I needed to reboot one or more of the systems that usually needs to be rebooted. BUT, no such luck, so I still have to access my e-mail and my office computer by the 'back-door' which I really do not like to do.

Made it home by about 1:30, and Jody and I headed off to Georgetown for spoilers at Dairy Queen. When we got home from that, I went and piled up in my big blue chair, turned on the TV, and settled in for a little nap. It would have been a much more restful time if it had not been for that damned pesky house fly that thought I was the most attractive thing it had ever buzzed. I would have tried valiantly to kill it, if that would not have caused serious whelps or bruising to my person, so I just tried to 'sleep-around' the annoyance, which did not work.

We left the house about 5:45 to head back into Austin to attend the Austin Empty Bowl Project Preview Party at the Marchesa Event Center. It was a wonderful function, and it is a really worthwhile cause. Search for it on the Internet. AND, the actual event is tomorrow from 11 until 3, so come on down and do your part for this really great cause. CHEAP too! My volunteering part of the function begins at 8 o'clock in the morning. I hope to see you all there.

2011 - Day Three Hundred Twenty Two; Friday...

Okay, it's Friday, but there is not a lot of shouting going on here. Tomorrow is TOTALLY booked, and most of Sunday as well. I will wait for next week to really celebrate, and have some time to myself/ourselves.

Tomorrow I am teaching a class at the Board, and tomorrow night we are going to a Preview Party for the 15th Annual Austin Empty Bowl Project. Google it, and show up on Sunday with a few dollars and support this really worthy cause. You will be glad you did.

Sunday is the actual Empty Bowl event, and I am scheduled to be there at 8AM.

And then there is next week. A short week, but that is good because I am a short person.

2011 - Day Three Hundred Twenty Two; Thursday...

Not a bad day, even if I was in a class all day (being instructed, not instructing). I was in the class with several of my instructor colleagues from various places in Texas; Killeen, Waco, Victoria, all around. This is a photo of me and Sherri, a colleague and friend I met just about a year ago (maybe more, who knows). Sherri is one of those folks you feel like you have known forever even if you just meet her. Wonderful!

On the way home tonight, I stopped at the California Pizza Kitchen at the Domain and met up with a couple (okay five) of my colleagues, and it was a great way to end the day. I really like the domain, it is just kind of a problem with parking (if you are in a hurry).

Once I got back to business of going home, I called Jody and he said he was kind of concerned that something had gotten the chickens. He said he was watching the news and heard a loud thump, lots of verbalizing from chickens, and then all was quiet. Not a chicken in sight (but no feathers either, which I always take as a good sign when the chickens are missing). No idea what it was, but by the time I got home, he said all the chickens were accounted for, so there is no telling what it was.

Meeting tomorrow morning, then some power real estate in the office, then home.

2011 - Day Three Hundred Twenty; Wednesday...

Great Googily-Moogily, it's hump day, and I am glad of that. I do have to admit however, that this Holiday thing is kind of taking me by surprise. It kind of snuck up on me (snuck does not really look like it should be a word).

This is a photograph of a bunch of us from Austin that were at the National Association of REALTORS conference in Orange County last week. It is really a handsome group, if I do say so myself!

Cold front supposed to be coming through this evening, and I will admit that it is cooling off nicely outside. Low temperatures expected to be in the 30's and 40's on Thursday morning, but not sure how long that is going to last.

Chickens are all seemingly happy, no blue eggs yet, but I will let you know when the first one arrives.

Gonna be a busy weekend, the whole thing is pretty much filled up already!

2011 - Day Three Hundred Nineteen; Tuesday...

I am, by nature (and by habit and by choice) a creature of habit. I love my routines, the monotony (sometimes) of my routines, and the comfort of my routines. I know where I am supposed to be (usually), why I am supposed to be there, and quite often, I even know what I am going to have for dinner, based on the day of the week. Nothing wrong with that in my book. I am comfortable, I am happy, I am loved, and in return I try to extend (honestly) that comfort, happiness and love.

Have I mentioned lately that I am the luckiest man in the world? It is true.

Not sure that my conscious thoughts acknowledge that on a constant basis, but the bottom line is, when it is all said and done, I am one lucky guy.

2011 - Day Three Hundred Eighteen: Monday...

Believe it or not, there is a (alleged) baked potato under all that processed cheese food. This was my breakfast and lunch on my travelling day. I had a 6:30 shuttle reservation, and I went to have breakfast at the Hotel at 6 AM, and it was reported that the restaurant did not open until 7. There was the 6 o'clock shuttle outside, so I asked if I could just go with them (I thought I would be able to get breakfast at the airport) and they said okay. We got to the next shuttle stop, and those folks did not show up for the shuttle until almost 7, which meant I gained no time whatsoever with all my hurrying.

AND, I did not get breakfast at the Orange County (John Wayne International) Airport. But, things were looking up! The airport opened their new security section today, and EVERYONE was going through the new full body scanners, and I was pretty darned excited about that. I was hoping to see a little glint of happiness on the person checking the scans, but the guy in front of me broke the scanner and everything went back to the old way of going through security. Boo-Hoo. How boring.

Made it back to Austin with no hitches, and life if good. I am home, and we are supposed to get some rain overnight and tomorrow. I will believe it when I see it.

Well, I must say, this was a pretty nice day, and it ended with the Diana Ross Concert at the National Association of REALTORS Conference in Orange County. Very nice, she still has what it takes. And hair! She has a lot of hair. I wonder what she looks like without the hair? And I also wonder where the hair lives?

Back in my room, getting packed for my trip home tomorrow morning. I have to be on a shuttle tomorrow morning at 6:30, so that is kind of a drag, but I am looking forward to getting back home.

2011 - Day Three Hundred Sixteen; Saturday...

Well, I actually got a little bit of rest today. Not really, I just thought I was getting some rest, but I actually walked all over the convention center again, and I am posting my journal early today, because it is going to be a long night.

I did have the pleasure of spending some 'quality' time at the trade show late this morning and early afternoon. There are a lot a good vendors there, and there were lots that were really interesting to me. Not of particular 'business' interest to me, but interesting nonetheless was the booth sponsored by the Canadian Association of REALTORS. GREAT, and it made for a pretty darned good photo as well.

I have been kind of holding back in my posts the last couple days because, actually, I have been really tired by the time I got around to writing. BUT...one thing I did yesterday for the first time in my life, was to get my shoes shined. I had my shoes shined in the Marriott by a woman named Patrice that has been shining shoes there for the last thirty years. Really! Thirty years of shoe shining, and I bet she makes a pretty darned good living at it. She is very nice, and she does a really good job, too. I HATE POLISHING MY SHOES, and I fear that it shows, but I may just have to begin taking my shoes to the shoe repair shop down the street from my office and have them do it. Patrice said a good shoe shine should last a couple weeks to a month, so maybe that will be the answer. We shall see.

ANYWAY, after this, I will be heading off to a reception, then a dinner and then an after party. Gonna be a lot of fun, but I think it will be a late night.

Not a whole lot going on tomorrow, and that is probably a good thing. Region 10 Caucus and drinks and Diana Ross. Pretty excited about that, so I hope it goes as planned.

2011 - Day Three Hundred Fifteen; Friday...

Yep. It is Friday, but I am out of town, which means it is not FRIDAY. BUT, I had a really nice day at the NAR Convention in Orange County (which really just sounds better than Anaheim).

Lots and lots of Birds of Paradise blooming all around, these are just a small sample of all of the beautiful blooms here. Since we have been drought stricken, it is really nice to see flowers and makes me wish we could get these to grow back in Austin.

Tomorrow is going to be a busy day, lots of meetings, education sessions and workshops.

And even the beautiful clouds were welcome. A bit chillish for most of the day, and we have a really nice fire in the stove right now, and all is right with the world.

2011 - Day Three Hundred Twelve; Tuesday...

I went and voted this evening on my way home from work. There was a log-jam of voter activity; two voters arrived at the same time. I was number 18 to cast my ballot, the other guy (I am embarrassed that I do not know his name) was number 19. A busy day at the Schwertner Community Center for voting. BUT, at least I voted. Once I got home, I asked Jody if he had voted and he had not, so we went and he made an even 20 voters for the day. AND, the fact that I know 40% of the people that cast a vote today tells you something about how everyone-knows-everyone out here.

Another great day of teaching at the Austin Board of REALTORS today. I really enjoyed these two days of teaching, and I hope everyone else feels the same way. This is a photo of the class; classic photo of a bunch of unrecognizable folks in the class room. NO need for permission to post that way.

Tomorrow I will be back at the Board, this time as a break sponsor for the same class I was teaching for two days. After that, I have a TREPAC committee meeting, then back to the office for some 'power real estate'. Then a few hours in the office on Thursday, then off the Orange County for the NAR convention. Lots of good information and experiences to be shared there.

2011 - Day Three Hundred Eleven; Monday...

Okay, if this is the first Monday in November, it must be Wurstbraten from the Zion Lutheran Church in Walburg, Texas. Every year since we have lived here (this is our fourth) we have participated in the Wurstbraten from the Church, and this year it was really good. Not so hot last year, but this year was GREAT. Good eats, and tomorrow I need to go vote, remind me about that. Thanks.

My entire day was spent teaching a GRI class at the Board, and it was great fun. I learned some new information, and the folks in attendance (about 40 of them) learned some information as well. At least I think they did, I got the impression they were learning something anyway.

Tomorrow is my final day in this cycle of teaching, and I expect it will be another good day in class, particularly if we get a little bit of rain.

I forgot to mention last night that we got a few little dribbles of rain yesterday, and there was a bit more today, and they are forecasting a bit more this evening and into tomorrow. 60% chance. The the highest chance we have had in a year, I think. Everyone, keep your fingers crossed for us, we need the rain!

2011 - Day Three Hundred Ten; Sunday...

To be honest, there is very little that I question when it comes to living out here in the country, on the edge of nowhere. I do not question the existence of old cast iron water pipes just below the surface of the land (and travelling for some distance above ground level) from what was once the site of 'Aunt Mary's house' to the old hand-dug well that still exists. I am not amazed by the recognition that there has been a terrifically slow leak for months about 15 feet from the office window. It was not enough to make the water meter move an muscle, the only way we knew it was there was because that is the only place on 44 acres of land with anything green on it. It did not baffle me to (with the help of Miguel) to dig it up this morning (in an effort to fix the leak) and find a two inch PVC pipe going nowhere, and it did not even concern me that there was another two inch PVC pipe just about six inches below that one.

What did amaze me was the fact that, three feet below ground level was a two inch PVC water pipe with a bright red shot off valve. THREE FEET BELOW GROUND LEVEL. I can understand a pipe going somewhere (I have no idea where), and I can find it within the realm of reason that the pipe could spring a (or maybe more than one) leak. But why in the hell did someone put a cut-off valve on a two inch water pipe and them bury it? Incredible. Maybe it sprung a leak before and they just happened to have this 'early Americanly engineered' fix laying around in a recycle bin somewhere. Just asking...

I got everything checked off my 'To Done' list today, and I am sore and tired, but happy.

Tomorrow and Tuesday will be full days of teaching, a day-and-a-half of office work, and then off to sunny Orange County for the NAR annual convention. Looking forward to that.

2011 - Day Three Hundred Nine; Saturday...

I made some pretty good progress on my 'To Done' list. Tomorrow I am going to trim back the tree that fell in the high winds earlier in the week, feed the cattle, finish reviewing for my class on Monday and Tuesday, put weatherstripping on the front door, maybe work the bees. Not sure about that one yet.

This apple was the size of a grapefruit, and it was delicious. We bought three or four of these a while back, and this last one was in the refrigerator, and it was still just as good as when we originally bought them. HUGE!

It seems that I have been given the answer to the NEWEST challenge of posting my blog entries to FaceBook. Thanks to Chris in our office for rooting out the answer to that SAME AND RECURRING problem. Now that I am reporting this success, we will wait and see if this entry uploads automatically, or if I have to continue driving Chris to distraction.

2011 - Day Three Hundred Six; Wednesday...

No surprise here, but today I was surrounded by jackasses and bird-brains. To get in on the low-down, you will need to check out one of my FaceBook posts from earlier today. BUT, this is a photo of the bird-brain.

Not a bad day, got lots of work done, made a couple appointments, got one property listed, and made it home at a reasonable hour. Not the hour I was expecting, but not an unreasonable one.

Tomorrow is going to be an interesting day. Go into the office early, then head-out mid-morning for some good old-fashioned team building with the Austin Board of REALTORS, and the retreat includes an overnight. Woo-Hoo!

Next week I will be teaching for a couple days, then a break on Wednesday, and then on Thursday I head to Orange County (really?) for the NAR Annual Conference. I have VIP seating for the Diana Ross concert. You know we are dating, right?

2011 - Day Three Hundred Five; Tuesday...

I went and did an Internet search for the word 'excellent' and was not really impressed with the results of the images. Most of them dealt with Smithers from 'The Simpson's' television series. After dinner, Jody and I sat out on the porch, and the flags were just enjoying themselves with the nice southerly breezes. If you are a regular to this journal, you know I carry on an intense love affair with the flags of Texas and the United States. Nothing much prettier or more eloquent than those two things in my mind, so that is my image for the word 'excellent'.

Working on 'excellent' because that is how my day could be best described. Perhaps excellent has even been 'dumbed down' because I just realized that I consider it an excellent day if nothing extraordinarily bad happens. There was nothing extraordinarily good either, but there were indeed lots of small, wonderful things in my day, and I shared it with lots of wonderful and extraordinary colleagues. You know who you are, and let's just leave it at 'if you build it...'.

OOOOHHHH, I love mysterious stuff!

I almost forgot, this is 'social networking', and I ALMOST started talking about a new listing in the '04. If you want to know about it, you will need to check out my business page, or give me a call.

Looking forward to tomorrow, how about yourself?
