Have you ever heard of a 'rain crow?' Me either, but Jimmie mentioned it the other day, so I thought I would look it up. The yellow-billed cuckoo (Coccyzus americanus) is member of the cuckoo family. Common folk names for this bird in the southern United States are rain crow and storm crow. These likely refer to the bird's habit of calling on hot days, often presaging rain or thunderstorms. Proof that you can learn something every day, all you have to do is to remember to investigate something you heard. I had a relatively calm day today, I did have a dentist appointment at 10:30, so I got that done, and James came over at lunch time and helped me with a video a friend of mine asked me to do. I got that sent off, and then I had a zoom meeting at 1 o'clock that I was 15 minutes logging on to, but I was there for most of it. I had a dinner from HEB (steak and potatoes that had a best by date of August 11th), but I am still here, not sick or anything. Linda and Jimmie invited me down, and we watched the third (of four) installment of The Yogurt Shop Murders on HBO. I remember a LOT about that actual crime, and it is interesting to see an interpretation of it over three decades later. Tomorrow will be calm, but I am sure I will find something to fill up the day.Monday, August 18, 2025
