2014 - Day 185/180 - Friday...

I hope everyone is enjoying the Fourth of July Holiday.  Today is officially the last day of Flag Week.  Because I said so.  I started it and I am stopping it.  Here are some things that I observed about flags that are displayed in and around central Texas.  Commercial.  Most flags are displayed in a really commercial venue.  There are more flags displayed at used car lots than anywhere else.  Used car lots average more flags per square foot than any other venue.  AND it does not detract from the generally shabby appearance of the used car lots.  I am here to tell you, you cannot dress up tacky.  Office buildings are another big source of flags, generally the uncommonly LARGE flags, the footprint of which could encompass half of an apartment complex.  State and other municipal properties are next, and there is probably some kind of a law that forces them to fly a flag.  The public schools are not in session now, so there were no flags seen at those institutions of higher learning.  I was surprised to see how many BARE flag poles there are in the area.  Why go to all the trouble of having an expensive flag pole (or three) if you are not interesting in completing the picture?  I don't get it.  Another thing I noticed was a relative absence of flags being displayed at residences.  Not many flags being flown outside houses.  That changed somewhat today, with folks putting out their flags for the Holiday.  We fly our flags every day of the year.  We had lights installed to properly illuminate them (it took us two or three tries to get it right, the solar flag lights have not got the technology down yet), and we swap out the flags when needed, and save them up for friends of ours (several different ones) that are active with the Boy Scouts so they can be retired properly and respectfully.  SO, pay attention to the flags you see, and think about what the mean.

Deeds, Actions, Changes, SALUTE, Kindnesses, Whirled Peas, FUN!
